At Ambassador Animal Hospital, we take every precaution
possible to ensure a safe anesthetic event. We realize that it is stressful to have your pet put under anesthesia to have a
surgery performed. To help you better understand the care we provide, the following describes some of our many safety measures that are followed.
On the morning of surgery, your pet will be checked-in and
questions will be answered by the doctor or technician. Your
pet will wear a hospital identification collar during their stay.
Your pet will have preanesthetic bloodwork performed prior to anesthesia to make sure it is safe to undergo anesthesia.
We have found numerous liver and kidney problems in
apparently healthy, young patients. We feel bloodwork is an important first step. If everything looks good with the bloodwork, we will next pre-medicate your pet. This will always include pain medication. Treatment of pain is of particular importance to ensure a safe and quick recovery.
Intravenous (IV) catheters are placed and IV fluids are begun prior to the procedure. IV fluids help maintain the patient’s blood pressure and allow IV access to administer any other needed medications. Patients are all intubated and maintained on gas anesthesia. Patients under anesthesia all have a dedicated technician monitoring their progress throughout the entire procedure including the recovery period. All patients in surgery or getting a dental procedure are kept on appropriate body warmth devices. Surgeries are all performed in a sterile setting using a sterilized pack of instruments and new, sterile suture material (human-grade suture). For any specific questions about your pet’s surgery, please let us know.
